Rayner Shield Champions

The Rayner Shield was presented to the Glyndwr Bowling Association at the start of the 1989 season by Mr Ronald Rayner of the Rhos on Sea Bowling Club. The Rayner Shield was meant to be played for by those clubs who had lost in the first round of the Binns Cup. 1989 saw the start of the Glyndwr Bowling Association formed with just 16 clubs after the setting up of the Wrexham area. Many of the clubs entered ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams to boost the entry list for the Binns Cup. The Shield at that time supplemented many clubs fixtures until the introduction of further evening leagues within the Glyndwr area. The shield was intended to be a handicap competition as the Binns Cup was an open draw which meant that strong teams and those less strong could compete on a level playing field. The Management Committee would meet as now to set handicaps for each of the teams knocked out in their first match played. In 2009 there was a change to include the losers of the first two rounds of the Binns Cup in the Rayner Shield. This has resulted in an improved competition for all clubs to take place in a level playing field and to allow players of all abilities to take part.
